ABOUT THE BOOK

In “The Things They Carried,” author Tim O’Brien’s presents a fictionalized account of his experiences in Vietnam. He paints a compelling—sometimes brutal—psychological portrait of a soldier caught in war’s grip. Many of the soldiers, like O’Brien, who made it home alive, are haunted by images of a nightmarish time in their lives. In this fictionalized account, O’Brien gives voice to the nightmare that lives on in the heads and hearts of Vietnam veterans.

"High up on the list of best fiction about any war...A stunning performance."
-- Robert B. Harris, New York Times Book Review

"...Just when you thought there was nothing left to say about the Vietnam experience...there’s plenty." --Martin Brady, Booklist

"Brilliant...acutely painful reading experience...Not since Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five has the American soldier been portrayed with such poignance..." --Library Journal

ABOUT THE BIG READ

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest.

The idea is simple: encourage as many people as possible to read—and discuss—the same book during a concentrated period.

ArtsWestchester and Westchester Library System, in partnership with dozens of cultural organizations, civic groups, schools and colleges, are bringing The Big Read to Westchester in 2010.
